How does the silver coin's edge look? If the coin edge should be reeded, and isn't (or vice versa) this is a giant red flag, since mint errors of this type are very rare. Also, if the coin has a seam around the edge, a bit of a protrusion on the edge that could be a casting sprue, or file marks indicating a sprue or seam was removed, don't buy the coin!

After the US Civil War (1865-1935), the US government created charters for private banks to print paper money which was backed by the US Government. There were a very large number of national banks chartered from all over the USA (e.g. Nashville, Tennessee; Key West, Florida; Bismarck, North Dakota; L.A., California). Many people collect "nationals" and the prices have gone up substantially (to around the 150 dollar level on average).

U.S. Silver Certificates are still valid forms of legal tender, however some may carry numismatic value as well. Early "Large Size" notes are particularly sought after, and depending on condition, can command high numismatic values. Later "Small Size" issues in crisp, uncirculated condition may also hold a premium over face value. However, notes that have been in circulation and are folded and/or torn will probably carry only legal-tender value.

A bad investment are "spurious set" coins. This is another popular TV shopping show product, plus they're found in magazines and swap meets quite often. "Spurious sets," by my definition, are sets that are put together out of lower grade and/or common coins according to some kind of theme. The coins are usually placed in fancy plastic holders, with nice quality packaging, and then you pay $38.99 for a set of five coins that are worth $2.99 just because they were all minted during World War II, or the Vietnam War, or because they're from around the world and commemorate Marilyn Monroe or some sort of cartoon characters. Such coins are usually genuine, and will probably appreciate in value, but they probably won't be worth what you paid for them anytime during the next five generations! These are a favorite of dealers like Littleton.

1923 U.S. Silver $1. Silver Certificates were issued beginning in 1880 and were redeemable at the Treasury in silver. Initially this silver would have been from the rich Comstock Lode discovered in Nevada in the 1870s. 1923 was the last series in which Silver Certificates were issued in the large-sized format that dated back to the first notes of the 1860s. In 1928 new, smaller notes would be issued. Today 1923 $1 Silver Certificates are generally worth between $20 and $150 depending on condition.
